The Panther Files Assessment is a gamified learning experience developed during my instructional design internship. Learners investigate assessment scenarios, analyze evidence, and apply instructional design principles through interactive challenges and immediate feedback.
Course Introduction: Learners begin their investigation by opening a new case and entering the Assessment Detective Agency.
The Panther Files was developed as the capstone project for my instructional design internship at Georgia State University. The project brought together instructional design theory, authentic assessment, gamification, and interactive eLearning development into a single learning experience.
As the sole instructional designer and developer, I designed every aspect of the project, including the instructional strategy, narrative framework, visual design, Storyline development, learner interactions, and assessment activities. The experience demonstrates my ability to transform instructional concepts into engaging, performance-focused learning experiences that promote critical thinking and authentic application.
Mission Briefing: Learners receive the case details, objectives, and evidence needed to begin the investigation.
Traditional assessments often measure recall rather than learners' ability to apply knowledge in authentic situations. The challenge was to design an assessment experience that encouraged learners to think critically, evaluate evidence, and make instructional decisions while remaining engaging and meaningful.
Evidence Collection: Learners gather and analyze clues before making assessment decisions.
As the sole instructional designer and developer, I designed and developed the entire learning experience from concept through implementation. I created the instructional strategy, narrative framework, assessment activities, visual design, Storyline programming, learner interactions, and feedback. Every element of the experience was intentionally designed to reinforce learning through investigation, critical thinking, and authentic decision making.
Development in Articulate Storyline 360: I designed and developed the complete learning experience, including instructional strategy, branching scenarios, visual design, interactions, and feedback.
Learners demonstrate understanding by solving realistic problems rather than completing traditional quizzes.
Instead of relying on multiple choice questions, I designed assessment activities that require learners to gather evidence, analyze information, and apply instructional design principles to solve authentic challenges.
A detective storyline transforms assessment into an engaging investigation.
The learning experience is framed as a detective case, giving learners a meaningful purpose for each activity. The narrative creates context and motivation while supporting the instructional objectives.
Each clue builds on previous discoveries, gradually increasing learner challenge.
The investigation unfolds in stages, allowing learners to develop confidence while applying new knowledge before advancing to more complex assessment decisions.
Feedback reinforces learner reasoning immediately after every major decision.
Each learner's choice generates targeted feedback that explains why a decision was effective or ineffective, encouraging reflection and strengthening understanding throughout the investigation.
Game mechanics support learning rather than distract from it.
Visual clues, case files, evidence collection, and investigation tasks were intentionally designed to reinforce instructional objectives while maintaining learner engagement and curiosity.
Designing The Panther Files strengthened my ability to integrate storytelling, gamification, and authentic assessment into a cohesive learning experience. The project reinforced that meaningful engagement comes from aligning every game mechanic with a learning objective, creating an experience that is both enjoyable and instructionally effective.
Designing this assessment strengthened my understanding of authentic assessment and gamification, demonstrating how realistic challenges and immediate feedback can increase learner engagement while supporting meaningful knowledge transfer.
